We review the electoral and boundary arrangements of councils to make sure they are fair. Our reviews include at least two rounds of public consultation before we make recommendations for change. 

• 16 January 2024 We decide how many councillors there should be
• 23 January - 1 April 2024 We carry out an initial public consultation on communities
• 2 July - 9 September 2024 We carry out a public consultation on our proposals
• 3 December 2024 We publish our recommendations
• TBD We ask Parliament to approve our recommendations
• 2025 New arrangements apply to local elections

Councillor numbers

The first stage of this electoral review is to determine the number of councillors who should represent the local authority in the future.

Effective date

The Borough of Thurrock (Electoral Changes) Order 2002 was made on 29 August 2002.

The new arrangements came into effect at the May 2004 elections.

Final report

Our recommendations for new electoral and boundary arrangements were published on 4 December 2000.
